The questions private clients actually ask
When does high-net-worth tax planning actually pay off?+
The earlier the better. Meaningful IHT, CGT and succession planning usually takes years to implement fully — gifting cycles, seven-year rules, share reorganisations and trust set-ups. Even so, there is almost always something worth doing at any point, from optimising the current year's tax to laying the groundwork for a future exit.
Trust or family investment company — which is right for us?+
It depends on control, income needs, family dynamics and how quickly you want wealth to leave your estate. Trusts remain powerful for certain assets and IHT strategies; FICs suit families who want retained control, structured governance and tax-efficient rolling investment. Often the right answer is a combination, not one or the other.
Do you work alongside our existing solicitor and wealth manager?+
Yes — that's usually how we work. We coordinate with your existing lawyers, investment managers and bankers rather than replace them. We are the tax and accounting anchor point that pulls the wider advice together into a single, coherent plan.
We're planning a business sale — when should we bring you in?+
Ideally 2–3 years before you go to market. Pre-sale restructuring, share class refreshes, Business Asset Disposal Relief, EOT feasibility and post-sale wealth structuring all work best when there's time to implement them properly. We're happy to run an initial confidential review even if the sale is still hypothetical.
How do you handle non-domicile and cross-border situations?+
We review UK residence under the SRT, work through the current non-dom / FIG regime, coordinate with overseas advisors and make sure UK reporting for foreign income, gains and structures is right. For complex cross-border cases we work with a trusted network of international tax specialists.
Is everything you do private and confidential?+
Yes. Discretion is a baseline for HNW work. Engagements are covered by strict confidentiality, we limit internal access to your file, and we're happy to work under NDA or through a family office intermediary when preferred.
